The Time Has Come to Say “Goodbye”

It’s another 4am wake up. I’ve been procrastinating writing this for a week. These cascading thoughts have been waking me up at this time for about 4 months now but this isn’t entirely unusual for a business owner.

So many thoughts about deadlines, unreturned emails, orders to suppliers that need to be placed, bills and subscriptions that need to be paid, costumes that need to made, altered, fixed. Sets that need repairs, storage that needs to be cleared, technology that needs replacing, websites that need changes, social media content that needs to be created. Rent that needs to be paid, oh and that reminds me the aircon needs to be fixed. The thoughts don’t stop, but the fighting to keep Sherbet Birdie alive continues.

It’s been almost spot on 20 years now. I’m writing this on the 13th June. That’s 20 years of healing with all of our clients, nay, family. We have all been in this together. You’ve keep us alive and we’ve revived your sense of self. We have shared happy tears, we’ve shared your sadness, we’ve lifted your chins and we’ve held you when it got all too much for you. We’ve walked you through the dark path to find you way back to your inner child. We’ve played, we’ve lifted, we’ve released, and we’ve watched you soar. And you have gifted us the ability to do this for 20 years.

20 years.

Your support has changed my entire life. My DNA.

The Sasha who started this journey was nervous, anxiety riddled, suffered imposter syndrome, couldn’t multi task, didn’t believe in herself, and quite frankly had little to no idea what she was doing. She wasn’t even a trained photographer. She believed in the mission of Sherbet Birdie however, and she believed in you. And she knew she knew you were more beautiful that you believed and she was determined to prove that to you. She was about to start a two decades-long fight to champion you and leave a positive impact on your life.

I stand so proudly knowing I achieved my mission alongside my fellow champions who fought for Sherbet Birdie’s mission too – who fought for you – Marija, Lauren, and Dianne. These three queens who believed in you as much as I do, and they believed in me.

Over the past 6 years the fight for goodness has morphed into something ugly, unsettling, and quite frankly, unbearable.

Slowly slowly social media has fought back against our message, Capitalism has leached the love out of the creative arts, imitators have undercut us, trolls have diminished us, bills have crept up in price. We have found ways to endlessly pivot and burned new paths to dodge and navigate all the above.

But, the fight against the Reserve Bank hiking rates again, the cost-of-living-crisis. The fight against the orange man and his antics, the fight against a burgeoning future of AI have all undermined our purpose, limited our reach, siphoned away our income, and leached away all of our energy.

I have lost my will to fight any longer. I am spent. I have succumbed. And I am sorry.

You fought beside us to keep us alive and thanks to your dedication, belief, love and support, you kept us going for two more years. TWO MORE YEARS. I will be forever grateful that you kept us in business and bought us more time to pursue our mission.

With deep sadness Sherbet Birdie will be closing the doors for good on the 23rd December, 2026.
